After the \u2018wine\u2019 or wash has been converted into vapor and then condensed back into a liquid it is called a distillate. Impurities are left behind in the original container.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The equipment used to distill spirits is called a STILL. A still has three essential parts: the\u00a0<strong>original container<\/strong>\u00a0in which the wash or wine is heated to turn into vapor, the\u00a0<strong>condenser<\/strong>\u00a0in which the vapor is cooled, and the\u00a0<strong>receiver<\/strong>\u00a0in which the distillate or distilled spirit is collected.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This system works because ethanol boils at 78.5\u2070C and water at 100\u2070\u00a0C. When the alcoholic wash (\u201cwine\u201d) is heated to 78.5\u2070C the alcohol boils off leaving other constituents, mostly water behind.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first part of the distillate is the \u201cheads\u201d followed by the \u201cheart\u201d and lastly the \u201ctails\u201d.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201cheads\u201d and the \u201ctails\u201d contained mostly impurities which also add to the flavor.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The distiller would decide the amount of impurities required and for what purpose.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The original liquid from which drinkable spirit is distilled can be grape wine (as in the case of Brandy), sugar wine (for Rum), fruit wine (for Cherry Brandy), or malted or un-malted grain wine (for Whisky, Gin and Vodka)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>POT STILL\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The pot still or the \u2018alembic or alambic\u2019 is the earliest and traditional form of still. These were basically enclosed kettles, which narrowed towards the top to collect vapor created by boiling. A downward pipe from the head carried the vapor through cold water and caused it to condense and it could be collected in a receiving chamber.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Copper was the best metal for making the still as it drew out the impurity from alcohol. It produced distilled spirits in batches, one batch at a time. It is a laborious and time consuming process. The stills have to be loaded up, boiled off, cleaned and recharged for every run.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"Advantages_of_Pot_Still\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><strong>Advantages of Pot Still<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It produces spirits that are individualistic due to presence of congeners.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spirits with pronounced aromas are produced.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spirits with heavy body produced.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Small quantity of wash can be distilled.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"Disadvantages_of_Pot_Still\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><strong>Disadvantages of Pot Still<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It needs more time and labour.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is costly to operate.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Needs frequent cleaning and refilling, after each distillation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-834b04b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"834b04b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-61ff50e\" data-id=\"61ff50e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3fc007 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e3fc007\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"628\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/ihmnotessite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PATENT.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-6205\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ihmnotessite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PATENT.png 628w, https:\/\/ihmnotessite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/PATENT-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-be6dfd1 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"be6dfd1\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-17dfd97\" data-id=\"17dfd97\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5fc5d1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f5fc5d1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>PATENT STILL METHOD\/COFFEE STILL METHOD\/COLUMN METHOD\/CONTINUOUS STILL METHOD<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was not until the late 1830\u2019s that a new form of still was invented which produced spirit as long as the wash was fed into it. It was called the continuous still or patent still or \u201cCoffey Still\u201d or the columnar still. It had two columns, the \u201canalyzer\u201d and the \u201crectifier\u201d columns.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201canalyzer\u201d vaporizes the alcohol from the hot wash. The rising alcohol vapors proceeded to the \u201crectifier\u201d column where they cooled down on\u00a0coming in contact with the cold wash. This purifies, increases the strength and condenses the alcoholic vapors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This process produces lighter styles of the spirit (Light body spirits).<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"Advantages_of_Patent_Still\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><strong>Advantages of Patent Still<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It does not require too much labour, cleaning and refilling.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More quantity is produced as compared to pot still.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is cost effective.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"Disadvantages_of_Patent_Still\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><strong>Disadvantages of Patent Still<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is not suitable for distilling small quantities of spirits.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aroma and other essential elements that are required in a drink may not be achieved.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Distillation is the process of converting a liquid into gas or vapor by heating it and then condensing it back into liquid form.
