The housekeeping department plays an important role in detecting the presence of pests in or around the establishment and organizing their control or eradication. However, the services of pest control i.e. spraying of pesticides etc is contracted to a specialized pest control agency under the supervision of housekeeper.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is pest?<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A pest is any organism that<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Competes with humans, domestic animals, etc for food or<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Injures human, domestic animals,<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Transmits disease to humans, domestic animals<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Annoys humans and domestic<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Types of pest<\/u><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Insects(e.g.-cockroaches, termites, beetles, fleas)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Arthropods(eight legged organisms)(e.g.- mites, ticks, spiders)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Microbial organisms(e.g.- bacteria)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Weeds (unwanted plants)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Molluscs(snails, slugs)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vertebrates (egg- mice&amp; other rodents)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Categories of Pest<\/u><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Continuous pest <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 nearly always present and require regular<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Sporadic\/ migratory\/ cyclic pest <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 require control occasionally or intermittently<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Potential pests <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 do not require control under normal conditions but may require control in certain<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>To identify &amp; control pests, one needs to know the following details-<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The physical features of pests<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Characteristics of damage they cause<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their development cycle and biology<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The goals of the pest management program. Pest control goal \u2013<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prevention: keeping a pest from becoming a<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Suppression: reducing pest numbers or damage to an acceptable<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication: destroying an entire pest<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Threshold levels \u2013<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Threshold are the levels of pest population beyond which you should take pest- control action if you want to prevent the pest in an area from causing unacceptable injury or harm.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>COMMON PESTS AND THEIR CONTROL-<\/u><\/span><\/h3><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong><u>BED BUGS<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are tiny parasitic creatures that feed on the blood of humans &amp; other animals. <u>Symptoms of<\/u> <u>presence<\/u> \u2013 Itching or rashes on the person sleeping on the bed. Blood stain on sheets or fluid stain on walls \/ furniture. Unpleasant odour<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>To eradicate an infestation,<\/u><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is necessary to treat the premises thoroughly by<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pouring boiling water into crevices is a temporary solution to get rid of bed<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A thick application of kerosene oil emulsion is also effective against bed<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>SILVERFISH<\/u><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are silvery grey insects that look like minutes fish without fins. They are nocturnal insect s primarily found in moist areas &amp; feed on cellulosic materials such as paper &amp; cellulosic fabrics such as cotton.<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h5><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Keeping moist areas clean &amp; treating those with insecticide will help to get rid of these pests.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pyrethrum &amp; sodium fluoride crystals are effective against<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>COCKROACHES:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These are several species of nocturnal insects that spends most of the day hiding in cracks,\u00a0around drains, or in other dark, secluded crevices. Two common species of cockroach are the German &amp; the oriental. T<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cockroaches are difficult pests to eradicate.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Proprietary cockroach- killer preparations may be used in the infested areas.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pest- control experts need to be called if the infestation<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maintaining proper hygiene &amp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\">MOSQUITOES:<\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These transmit diseases such as malaria, filarial, &amp; yellow fever. Eradication:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Repair &amp; fill all pits &amp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cover drains &amp; put pesticides into these to prevent larvae from thriving there &amp; growing into adult<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fine gauze on windows prevents entry of mosquitoes.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An effective, eco friendly method for the control of mosquitoes is to place pots of the water around the property for a week or two. During this time, mosquitoes lay their eggs in the water. Before the eggs can develop however, this water is discarded, killing the<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>MICE AND RATS:<\/u><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rats and mice both carry disease germs (such as plague &amp;typhoid) &amp; may cause food poisoning, infection, jaundice etc.<\/span><\/p><h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h4><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Poisoning<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trapping<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fumigating<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To eliminate their food supply &amp; shelter<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rat-proof buildings<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ultrasonic devices<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>FLIES:<\/u><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These filthy insects are dangerous to health as they contaminate food, causing diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery, and so on. They carry the disease germs on their legs and in their saliva. These are transferred to the food on which they sit.<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h5><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first essential step is to destroy all possible breeding grounds early in the year before egg-laying<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Burn all\u00a0 garbage,\u00a0 keep\u00a0 dustbins\u00a0 covered,\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0 maintain\u00a0 a good standard of cleanliness for the<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Three teaspoons of formalin + 1 pint of milk\/water + sugar should be placed in saucers in susceptible areas to trap &amp; kill<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aerosol fly-killer sprays are also<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>ANTS:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">these insects generally invade in large numbers when they come in search of food, especially sweet substances. They enter through crevices and travel along a definite track in a procession.<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h5><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The ants can be systematically trapped at the point where they enter an<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The vulnerable areas must be emptied of food, thoroughly cleaned,&amp; borax \u2013 which repels them- spread over the shelves\u00a0 until the ants cease to come &amp; eventually go to find food\u00a0 else\u00a0 where<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the nest is located, it can be destroyed by placing 2 tablespoonfuls of carbon disulphide at the<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TERMITES:<\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>These are<\/u> social insects, like ants. They\u00a0 are\u00a0 also\u00a0 called\u00a0 white\u00a0 ants\u00a0 because of their appearance.<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h5><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Soil should be treated before construction of buildings with an appropriate termite killer<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During construction wood should not be allowed to come within 6 inches of the ground.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coat any untreated and exposed wood with an appropriate insecticides<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Seal all cracks and<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Increase of infestations lightly puncture kick out holes and inject an appropriate insecticide into the hole<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturate infested furniture with Orth<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wax and varnish all wood and coat with linseed oil to cover the pores.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>BEETELS:<\/u><\/span><\/h5><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carpet beetles attack furs, carpets, all kinds of woolen textiles. They have emerged as a major pest to hotel textiles. They flourish\u00a0in situations where they can remain undisturbed-for example; beneath carpets, around skirting boards, &amp; in wardrobes. They usually targets animal\u2019s wool, leather &amp; the damage often takes the form of irregular holes in these.<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eradication:<\/span><\/h5><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Frequent &amp; thorough vacuum cleaning of fluff &amp;\u00a0Furniture beetles\/woodworm- this beetle makes its home in crevices &amp; cracks of furniture made of unpolished wood. The first sign of infestation is usually small piles of yellowish bore dust found beneath the Unpolished wood should be\u00a0 treated\u00a0 with\u00a0 commercial\u00a0 anti wood worm preservative, polish, varnish, or lacquer to prevent the beetles from laying eggs in furniture.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To kill woodworm, the crevices &amp; exit holes should be sprayed with a proprietary woodworm killer<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>MOTHS:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are two types: Clothes moth &amp; moths attacking foodstuff.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Cloth moth<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Clothes moth attacks wool, fur, leather etc and hides in light or with activity.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wash clothes in hot water or dry-clean.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Seal in airtight\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Place under<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Food Moth<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thorough cleaning of food area with detergent and hot water.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vacuuming and removing any larvae or<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rinsing are with 50-50 solution of vinegar and water to kill larvae and eggs.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throw away infested food and wash and dry the<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>FUNGI:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fungi can cause considerable structural damage to a property. It is more likely to be found in kitchen, bathrooms, &amp; roofs, windows frames &amp; skills, door &amp; door frames &amp; attack timber with a moisture content of more than 30 percent.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">METHODS OF PEST CONTROL:<\/span><\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1). Natural controls \u2013<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Climate \u2013weather conditions (temperature, day length, &amp; humidity) affect pest activity. Pests may be killed or suppressed by main, freezing temperature, drought, or other adverse weather<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Natural enemies<\/u>&#8211; birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, &amp; mammals feed on some pests &amp; help controls their<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Geographic barriers<\/u>&#8211; features such as mountains large bodies of water restrict the spread of many<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Foods &amp; water supply<\/u> \u2013pest population can thrive only as long as their food &amp; water supply<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Shelter<\/u>&#8211; over wintering sites&amp; places to hide from predators are important to the survival of some pests.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2). Applied controls in a hotel-<\/span><\/h3><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Mechanical\/physical control<\/u>&#8211; traps, screens, barriers, fences, nets, radiation &amp; electricity can sometimes be used to prevent the spread of pest into an area.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Sanitation-<\/u> good sanitation, improving cleanliness, eliminating pest harbourage, increasing the frequency of garbage pick-ups &amp; proper design of food-handling area help to prevent pest infestations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><u>Chemical control-<\/u> pesticides are chemical used to destroy the pests, control their activity, or prevent them from causing damage.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ROLE OF HOUSEKEEPING &#8211; INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Integrated pest management is the combination of appropriate pest control tactics into single plan to reduce pests and their damage to an acceptable level with least disruption to other living organisms and non organic surroundings at the treatment site.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>To develop an integrated pest management system, one must<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Identify the pest or pests to be dealt with<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Determine the pest control goals<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Know what control tactics are available<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evaluate the benefits and risks of each tactic<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Choose most effective strategy<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Use each tactic in the strategy correctly<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Observe local, state, and union regulations that may apply to the situation<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pest Control refers to the regulation or management of a species defined as a pest, usually because it is perceived to be detrimental to a person&#8217;s health\u00a0 or infrastructure.
