In 1763,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Britain_in_the_Seven_Years%27_War\">victory in the Seven Years&#8217; War<\/a>\u00a0led to the growth of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_British_Empire\">First British Empire<\/a>. With defeat by the United States, France and Spain in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_American_Independence\">War of American Independence<\/a>, Britain lost its 13 American colonies and rebuilt a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_British_Empire\">Second British Empire<\/a>\u00a0based in Asia and Africa. As a result\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Culture_of_the_United_Kingdom\">British culture<\/a>, and its technological, political, constitutional, and linguistic influence, became worldwide.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_World_War\">First World War<\/a>\u00a0(1914\u20131918), with Britain in alliance with France, Russia and the United States, was a furious but ultimately successful total war with Germany. The resulting\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/League_of_Nations\">League of Nations<\/a>\u00a0was a favourite project in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interwar_Britain\">Interwar Britain<\/a>. In the Second World War France, the Soviet Union and the U.S. joined Britain as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allies_of_World_War_II\">the main Allied powers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0In, 1945\u201350 the Labour Party built a welfare state, nationalized many industries, and created the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Health_Service\">National Health Service<\/a>. The UK took a strong stand against Communist expansion after 1945, playing a major role in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_War\">Cold War<\/a>\u00a0and the formation of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NATO\">NATO<\/a>\u00a0as an anti-Soviet military alliance with West Germany, France, the U.S., Canada and smaller countries.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NATO\">NATO<\/a>\u00a0remains a powerful military coalition. The UK has been a leading member of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations\">United Nations<\/a>\u00a0since its founding, as well as numerous other international organizations. In the 1990s neoliberalism led to the privatisation of nationalized industries and significant deregulation of business affairs. London&#8217;s status as a world financial hub grew continuously. It joined the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Economic_Community\">European Economic Community<\/a>\u00a0in 1973, thereby weakening economic ties with its Commonwealth.
