The laws set norms of terminology permitted on the label and names under which wine can be sold.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><ol><li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DEUTSCHER TAFELWEIN:<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">German table wines from biggest regions in Germany, made from German grown grapes, minimum 8.5 OIML e.g. Rhein.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">LANDWEIN:<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are similar to French Vin De Pays. These wines are from specific, named, &amp; local area<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">QUALITATSWEIN BESTIMMTER ANBAUGEBIETE (QBA):<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wines from specified wine regions, each region has a limited number of permitted grape varieties. All wines carry AP number, which shows that they have undergone analytical and tasting tests.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">QUALITATSWEIN MIT PRADIKAT (QMP):<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is above QBA level and producers are not allowed to add sugar to the grape must to increase the alcohol level. Wine to be classified QMP. The grape must have higher natural sugar. The Chaptalization is not allowed in these wines. QMP wines are split into the following categories:<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ol><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kanbinett<\/strong>: These are lightest QMP wines. It is originally referred to grower\u2019s choice \u2013 the wine which grower kept for himself, but now wines having this denomination have come to market for selling therefore the word is no longer a reliable indication of quality.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Spatlese:<\/strong> if literally translated means \u2018late picked\u2019 therefore refers to wine from late harvested grape which is high in alcohol.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Auslese:<\/strong> wine made by using choicest grapes or gathering of selected bunches.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Beerenauslese<\/strong>: wine from over ripe fruit, berries picked singly. Very expensive and sweet.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Trocken Beerenauslese (TBA):<\/strong> very sweet wine made from shriveled grapes. Which have noble rot.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Gold Beerenauslese<\/strong>: wine made by gathering of ripest berries, literally gathering of single golden berries.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Eiswein<\/strong>: wine made from grape while frozen. Grapes are left on vines February, which must be harvested and pressed below -7 degree C. the resultant wine is very sweet, may be consumed as liqueur at the end of the meal.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TAFELWEIN \u2013BLEND OF WINES:<\/strong> there are other two categories i.e. Trocken meaning Dry and second on Halbtrocken meaning semi-dry. Quality classification of a German wine has no relation to area, it is based on sweetness or ripeness of grapes.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grape varieties:<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Riesling: it is a late ripener, has ability to withstand very cold winter temperature i.e. -22 degree C. it has good balance of sugar and acidity.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sylvaner: this grape ripens earlier than Riesling, produces mellow and soft wines.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Traminer: they are small and late ripening grapes like Riesling but produce highly aromatic wines with lasting bouquet.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muller-Thurgau: is a grape variety, which is cross between Riesling and Sylvaner.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir): most notable black grape for red wines.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">SUSSRESERVE: it is unfermented grape juice used for rounding off unharmonious acidity of wine. It is used by wine maker to improve their quality of wine. Germany produces 85% white wines although red wine production is increasing. Oak barrel ageing technique has been introduced.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>AMTLICHE PRUFUNGSNUMMER (AP) NUMBER,<\/strong> consists of<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The year of examination of wine<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The community number<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Examining code number<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Code number of the bottle \u2013 which includes wine category, alcohol content and contents\/quality in bottle. (i.e. 750ml)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">German sparkling wine-<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sekt is the well known German sparkling wine. It is often made from thin acidic juice of unripe grapes. Sekt is made by tank method. However, smaller producers use pure Riesling and make their wines by \u201cMethode champenoise\u201d known in Germany \u201cGlaschengarung\u201d.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Deutsher Sekt: this sparkling wine made from German grapes while sekt is made from imported wine grapes which may or may not be blended with German wine.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>WINE PRODUCING REGIONS OF GERMANY<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wine producing regions of Germany are:<\/span><\/p><ol><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">MOSEL-SAAR-RUWER<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">RHEINBGAU<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">RHEINPLAIZ<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">NAHE<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">RHEINHESSEN<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">AHR<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">BADEN<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">FRANKEN (FRANCONIA)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">WUTTEMBERG<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>WINES OF MOSEL-SAAR-RUWER<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moselle wines are those grown in the valleys of the moselle and its tributaries, the Saar and Ruwer. The Mosel River runs from Luxemberg down to Koblenz. In this district subsoil is mostly slate. Few grapes other than Riesling are grown.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Mosel is a Riesling area but the old variety of Elbling is now reviving. Elbling, because of its acidity, was used for making base wines for the German sparkling wine sekt.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moselles wine come in flute shaped green bottles.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wines which are considered best from Lower Mosel are:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bruttig<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cobern<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cochem<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Senheim<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Winnigen<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The best ones from middle Mosel are:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bernkastel<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brauenberg<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dhron<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Erden<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Graach<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kues<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Neumagen<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Piesport<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Traben<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trabach<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wehlen<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Zelltingen<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Best from Ruwer valley:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grunhaus<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Waldrach<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Best from Saar valley:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ayl<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ockfen<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saarburg<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wiltingen<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Serrig<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oberemmel<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mosel also boasts of some of Germany\u2019s finest vineyards like Bernkasteler Doctor.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>WINES OF RHEINGAU<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Rheingau is a home of Hock which is traditionally sold in brown bottles. Hock is regarded as generic name. the word Hock is derived from Hochheim, a wine growing centre on the right bank of mainz, from where some of finest German wines come.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The grape varieties used are:<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Riesling \u2013 white<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sylvaner \u2013 white<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Portugieser \u2013 red<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) \u2013 red<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The famous producers of Rheingau are:<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Schloss Vollrads<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Schloss Johannisberg<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>WINES OF RHEINPLAIZ<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wines of this region have good balance between the acidity of the north (Mosel and Rheingau) and the alcohol of the south (Baden).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The area is protected by Haardt mountains and vineyards in shade i.e. shadow of these mountains produce best wines.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A variety of grapes grown in this area are:<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Riesling<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muller Thurgau<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kerner<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Morio Muskat<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grau Burgunder<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spatburgunder<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>WINES OF NAHE<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The region is situated near Nahe River, a tributary of Rhine.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The grape variety used is:<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Riesling<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muller Thrgau<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sylvaner<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The best wines are produced: Schlossbockel Heim, Nieder Hausen<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>WINES OF RHEINHESSEN<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is contained within a loop of the River Rhine during its course from worms past Mainz to Bingen and is bounded on its west side by the Nahe River.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The main grape variety: Muller Thurgau<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The best wine: Nierstiner<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">WINES OF OTHER REGIONS OF GERMANY<\/span><\/strong><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>AHR<\/strong> produces red and rose wines from spatburgunder and portugieser grapes.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BADEN<\/strong> stretches from foothills of blackforest in the north, right down to Basel in Switzerland. Main grape variety used is Muller Thurgau and Spatburgunder. The red, rose and white wines are produced.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FRANKEN:<\/strong> this is north easterly region of Bavaria known for its beer and wine.
